How to have an alias for my blog different from my log in

Hi,
I just created my first blog on write.as and I have customized it for my own domain. So far so good.

I find it confusing, however, that my first blog’s alias/collection is not semantically related to the name of my blog, but rather to my username, which is completely different. I intend to use the cli for my workflow, and so this peculiarity became immediately obvious to me.

Conceptually, I think of my username as being the overarching category, so to speak, and then each of the three blogs would have aliases/collections named separately for those blogs.

From what I can tell, if I create a second and third blog, the alias/collection names for these will be separate and distinct from my username. But there will always be one blog whose alias/collection name is the same as my username. I’m sure there must be a good engineering reason for this, but I find it confusing.

I think I can live with this if for now if I just focus on my one blog, but create second blog that I would move my posts to (I only have one post so far, so not a big deal). And I would need to move my custom domain to the new blog. If I do this, will there be any delay with getting my custom domain working with the second blog. Or any other issues?

Thanks for listening.

Hey, thanks for the input! To your question, creating a second or third blog won’t cause any issues with migrating. Especially if you’ve already pointed your custom domain to Write.as, there shouldn’t be any delays with your DNS settings, so it should point to the new blog almost immediately.

As for why things are designed this way, it’s because the vast majority of users on the platform only have one blog, and this behavior I think matches their expectations. (For example, I signed up with the username “matt” and my blog is write.as/matt.) Besides that, each blog is basically its own independent site – the ability to have multiple blogs under a single account is really just a matter of convenience. But it’s assumed the initial blog you create will kind of be your “default.”

If you see the setup a little differently, I’d definitely recommend setting things up how you suggested, by moving your main blog content into a secondary one. Alternatively, you could always simply change your username to reflect your main blog.

Would love to know if that all is working out. But again appreciate the perspective!
