Accessing Mastodon account

Hi, All!

I’m probably barking up the wrong tree here, but how do I access the mastodon account that write freely set up to post my blog?

how do I find the password etc…

This is most confusing and would be simpler if there were a comments section on the blog itself as this means using two different programmes / browser windows open let alone having to find your user name etc on mastodon..is there a simpler an less time consuming way to do this or as I say, have I got this wrong?

cheers all

The short answer is you don’t.

On the Mastodon side anyone following your blog’s account sees and interacts with it pretty much as with any other Mastodon or fediverse account. However, on your blog’s side there is no timeline or fediverse view. The blog is not a Mastodon client and doesn’t support following or interacting with other fediverse accounts. The blog is essentially a broadcast-only interface to the fediverse and just publishes a fediverse-accessible feed of your posts.

Hi Paolo,

Many thanks for the reply, which to be fare makes a lot of sense. My main concern was the lack of control over the Mastodon side of things, which I have mixed feelings about as, I’m having to keep an eye on two programmes rather than one and the other side is (not that I feel I have any kind of audience), but bolting it to Mastodon seems like its creating an isolating bubble rather than creating exposure to a wider audience…but it is what it is i guess..

There’s a partial but useful workaround that requires an ordinary Mastodon account in addition to the blog’s account. These instructions refer to Write.as which I use and may differ on Write Freely.

In the blog settings of Write Freely, under Customize > Post Signature add the handle of the Mastodon account anywhere in the text field and save the changes. When you publish a new post, the fediverse post generated by Write Freely will include the Mastodon handle in the text. This way, whenever someone replies to the fediverse post they will @mention also your Mastodon account thus allowing a conversation on Mastodon.

Write.as lists the number of fediverse likes on posts when you’re logged in and forwards to Remark.as the replies to the blog’s fediverse account. I don’t know how Write Freely handles this.

Hi Paolo,

Thank you so much,

Its a fudge, but a good one.

Thanks again,

Porph!

You’re welcome. And yes, it’s a hack in the original tradition.
